Three bystanders were killed and eight severely injured after a shipping truck collided with a No. 56 bus on Shunjiang Lu at Jiuyan Qiao Friday morning at around 10:30. After the collision, the bus reportedly swerved out of control and ran into a crowd of passengers waiting at the stop. Among the fatalities was 29-year-old painter Fu Kailai (傅开来), who was waiting at the bus stop with his fiancee and her mother en route to his studio in Sansheng Xiang. Fu had exhibited locally and nationally. Local artists are now discussing a large-scale memorial exhibition to help raise money for Fu's family.
The Chengdu Gongruan Networking Technology Co., Ltd. was fined RMB8.77 million as part of a court-ordered crackdown on those who benefitted from Tomatolei.com's "Tomato Garden," a pirated version of Windows XP. The landmark case is said to be China's biggest-ever case on software-copyright infringement.

Crackdown on drunk driving

As of yesterday, Chengdu police have detained 192 drivers who were determined to be driving under the influence. China's laws state that blood alcohol content of above 20 mg per 100 mL constitutes driving under the influence. Violators of the law face fines, temporary suspensions of their driver's licenses, and points on their driving records.
In Yibin's Cuipin district, a local farmer found his stock of 30,000 kilograms of fish dead on Thursday. He claims the fish, worth RMB60,000, were poisoned to death.
A man who quit smoking in order to save money for his decade-long lottery habit hit an RMB5.66 million jackpot last Tuesday. "Last year, my wife told me to stop smoking if I wanted to save money to play the lottery. What can I say? It worked," said the man. He said he plans to use part of the money to improve his family's house and save the rest.

Budget airline AirAsia X announced its plans to offer four weekly flights between Chengdu and Kuala Lumpur starting October 20. Bookings are available from August 26 to 30 at RMB338 (coach, one way, taxes included).
Taiwan-based EVA Air and UNI Air will launch new routes on August 31, including a weekly flight between Chengdu and Kaohsiung. TransAsia Airways, another Taiwan-based carrier, will add flights to Chengdu by the end of September, and Air China also announced plans to fly between Taipei and Chengdu.
