For those who think China is somewhat lacking in subcultures, skater culture, at least, is alive and well.
The skateboarders set off from Tianfu Guangchang yesterday at 1:30 p.m. and headed south along Renmin Nan Lu to the Sichuan Provincial Stadium. Among them were foreigners as well as female skaters.
After the skate parade, which attracted much attention from onlookers, the skaters loaded onto a bus and headed to the Zizhu Guangchang where they performed tricks and competed for prizes.
It's no wonder that the event was sponsored and promoted by skate-shoe manufacturer Vans. Nonetheless, Chengdu's skateboarders have been active in organizing themselves.
Chengdu skater group 411, for instance, has a handful of videos online showing their tricks at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What's that? A cover of an Elastica song? Super Mario songs might be retro, but covers of '90s songs just make us feel old.
