Wall paintings were discovered last week inside an ancient Buddhist temple by a group of researchers from Sichuan University. The temple, Xuankong Gumiao (悬空古庙 or "Suspended Ancient Temple"), is situated 3600 meters above sea level, on top of Gada Mountain of Jinchuan in the Aba Autonomous Prefecture. Historians are comparing them to the well-known wall paintings at Dun Huang.
The wall paintings are described as "delicately well-crafted. Even after thousands of years of wind and rain, [the paintings] have still retained their color and beauty."
The team who discovered the paintings are part of Sichuan University's Zang ethnic minority research department. The group had climbed up the mountain before reaching the temple and finding the paintings.
