The nearly 200-year-old bridge TongJi Bridge (通济桥) in Huayang, Shuangliu County, collapsed Thursday afternoon, yet one more casualty resulting from this season's heavy rains.
The waters had flooded one of the shores of LaoCheng Area (老城区). A convenience-store owner near the head of the bridge recounted the scene.
"[I could] hear heavy objects crashing into the water. I turned around, the top and the pier of the bridge had split into smaller fragments, drifting into the depths of the river."
The collapse was over in 20 minutes.
The 98.7-meter bridge was built in 1825 and had been weakened by the rising water levels in the river.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported after the incident as the bridge had been closed nearly a month ago when the authorities announced the foundations of the bridge were unstable.
