Entering the 3D transportation era: the Chengdu subway in photos
The first Chengdu Metro Line 1 test train rolled out from the Century City Station platform toward the South Train Station on June 2, 2010 at at 10:51 a.m. Yesterday, the West China City Daily released a series of 15 photos of the construction of the subway.
On October 1 of this year, Line 1 of the Chengdu Metro will officially open. Just one month from now, Chengdu will enter the era of the subway.
On December 28, 2005, after 14 years of planning, the first phase of construction on Chengdu Metro Line 1 began. Two heavy hydraulic diggers began excavating the first piece of land around what would become the Metro Line 1 Nan Sanhuan (South Third Ring) Station, and Chengdu entered the "3D transportation" era. Over 1,000 days and nights passed, and in August 2010, the first car was mounted and run along Chengdu Metro Line 1. From the south (New Exhibition Century City Station) to north (Shengxian Lake Station), passing through Chengdu's city center district took a mere 33 minutes. Next month, the official public opening of this fast, smooth, reliable train will lead Chengdu's entry into the subway era.
A photo can only capture one moment in time, but these 15 never-before-published photos together comprise a thread of many moments in time. This thread is a complete and true recording of the course of the Chengdu subway's birth.
The site of what is now Tianfu Square in May 2006. The underground layers had been under construction for over two years, and the surface level was opened to the public in October of that year.
