China's high-speed train network continues to expand! By 2012, the journey from Chengdu to Beijing will be a mere eight-hour trip.
And in related (but slightly less exciting) news, thanks to the launch of the CHR1-type high-speed trains, citizens will be able to travel between Chengdu and Dazhou in no more than two-and-a-half hours instead of three.
After around 120,000 Chengdu residents tried out the new subway a few weekends ago, one forum poster complained that not one waste bin could be found on the trains. And indeed, says a spokesperson for the Chengdu Metro Corporation, via this report on the Chengdu Evening Post, Chengdu Metro riders will not find waste bins on any of the carriages. Why? For "sanitation and safety considerations," says the spokesperson. Besides, passengers aren't supposed to be eating or drinking on the trains anyway. But the spokesperson assures nervous passengers that there will be trash cans in the stations where waste can be deposited.
Chengdu Metro Line 4 will begin construction this year. The three-year, RMB12.562 billion project will link Gongping to Shahe. Construction on Line 3, which connects Hongpailou to Tianhui Town, will also start soon. A total of five lines is planned to be completed within five years. And by 2020, the city aims to have completed 340 km of subway line, covering 70 percent of the city.
Five parks in Chengdu will tear down their walls. From next year, People's Park, Xinhua Park, Tazishan Park, Yongling Park, and Nanjiao Park will all be open 24 hours.
The bell tower (also called The First Clock of Chengdu) on Tianfu Square was dismantled last Monday. The oldest China Telecom service hall in Chengdu will also be torn down along with the tower, and the "Tianfu Opera House" will be built in its place.
