A 650 bus en route from the Wuguiqiao Bus Station to Xindu burst into flames yesterday afternoon, sending more than 10 passengers fleeing for their lives.
The bus was on Jinhua Qiao when it spontaneously combusted. Firefighters arrived at the scene 20 minutes later and were able to completely eradicate the flames but not before the bus had been totally devoured by the fire.
Said an eyewitness, who immediately called emergency hotline 119, "At first the driver's area was full of white smoke, and then it turned blacked, and then we saw flames."
According to the witness, the driver opened the bus' doors and called to all passengers to get off the bus as quickly as possible. The dozen or so passengers all managed to exit through the back door and dispersed safely away from the bus. The driver attempted to put out the flames with the fire extinguisher.
Some moments later, the gas tank exploded, causing the windows to shatter. The vibrations were felt as far as five meters away from the bus.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
