The Chengdu East Train Station, western China's largest and most advanced integrated transport hub opened last Sunday (8 May), reported Sichuan News Network and Chengdu Economic Daily.
The 100 billion yuan venture is expected to serve a daily average of 200,000 passengers when running at full capacity. A business district will be formed in the 12 square kilometres around the station.
Eight trains made their inaugural departures from the Chengdu East Station on Sunday, with a reported 50,000 Chengdu residents attending the station's grand opening. However, most did not board trains, as many of the trains (boasting a total passenger capacity of 10,000) ran with empty seats.
Additionally, some passengers reportedly went to the wrong train station for departure from Chengdu. Tickets for trains departing from the North Train Station are labeled "Chengdu" (成都), while those for trains departing from the new East Station are labeled "Chengdu East" (成都东).
Station spokesperson Deng Hong said refunds and amendments have been made whenever possible for passengers who went to the wrong station on the opening day.

Baggage and hand-carry regulations
In another report, authorities reminded passengers about hand-carry regulations for the new station. Not more than five lighters are allowed to be brought onboard by each passenger. Fruit and vegetable knives and individually packaged alcohol are disallowed for hand-carry. Liquids such as nail polish remover and shampoo are permitted whereas flammable hair mousse and gel have to checked in instead.
Earlier, much was reported about the fact that passengers do not have to exit the train station to get to other forms of transport, as it is linked to the city bus station, long-distance bus station and cab stands, as well as parking facilities for private cars, in addition to Metro Line 2 and Line 7.
Passengers arriving from the long-distance bus station or city buses, and those in the west and east plaza of the station can enter via the west and east entrances, which features six and four inspection booths respectively. Those taking cabs and other forms of transport can alight from the north and south entrances, with two inspection booths each. The VIP waiting hall has one inspection point too.
Passengers without tickets may enter the waiting hall but are not allowed platform access.
