Taoping (桃坪羌寨) lies approximately 170 kilometers (or three-and-a-half hours by car) northwest of Chengdu in Aba Zhou, Lixian, near Wenchuan.
The 2,000-year old Qiang minority settlement is the oldest and best-preserved of its kind, featuring a multi-level complex.
Constructed in a maze-like fashion, the lower levels comprise narrow corridors and hidden passages while the upper levels are host to ancient towers up to 30 meters tall.
From Chengdu, a daytrip is possible, although two days will give you ample time to explore the area.
The Wenchuan earthquake caused damage to some of the structures, but most are still open to visitors.
There are no direct buses from Chengdu to Taoping (四川省雅安市阿坝州理县桃坪羌), so travelers are advised to take a bus either to Wenchuan (汶川) and then take a minibus to Taoping. Buses depart frequently from the Chadianzi Station as well as the North Station in Chengdu. Tickets should be approximately RMB 40 each way.
