CHENGDOO citylife The Board Game is an old-school-style board game developed by the creators of CHENGDOO citylife Magazine and contained completely within the 49th issue of that magazine (October 2011).
The game centers around life as a foreigner in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan province. Each of the five players is assigned one of eight characters—English teacher, foreign student, expat, businessperson, intern, China expert, traveler, and wandering artist—and instructed to complete three missions and obtain a certain number of visas. The character profiles are based on stereotypical occupations held by foreigners living in Chengdu.
The rules are straightforward and rely on elements of luck as well as strategy. Player movement is directed by their missions and "fortune cookies," which are drawn periodically and may help or hinder players along their way to winning. Cockroach and panda tokens introduce additional obstacles to the players' paths.
CHENGDOO citylife The Game is designed to reflect life in Chengdu, and elements are drawn from features of Sichuan, including Sichuan opera masks as character tokens, a map of Chengdu as the board, pandas, cockroaches, and local venues featured on the fortune cookies. All illustrations are by German illustrator and graphic novelist Sascha Hommer.
The game, which will be released initially only in an English-language version, is the first of its kind set in Chengdu.
The game is set to debut at the CHENGDOO citylife Board Game Release Party and Tournament event this Saturday at the New Peterpan restaurant. For more information and how to reserve a FREE spot at this special event, click here.
