A four-year-old died Sunday evening after falling into an abandoned manhole near the Cujin Garden residential area at Wenchang Zhong Lu in the southwest corner of Chengdu.
The boy and his mother, Suining residents, were ready to cross the street on their way to visit an acquaintance when a delivery truck crossed in front of their path. The boy, walking ahead of his mother, fell straight into the uncovered hole, which had been obscured from sight by the passing truck.
There are two uncovered manholes at this intersection. They are about 8 meters deep and not quite 1 meter in diameter.
Police and firefighters were called to the scene but were unable to find any signs of the boy within the depths of sewage, estimated at about 4 meters deep, on the first sweep. During the second sweep, his hat appeared. It wasn't until after 6 p.m. and with the help of reinforcement teams that the boy's body was dredged up.
Locals reported that the two manholes were abandoned after construction on the nearby apartment complexes were completed. A spokesperson said that they would be covered up as soon as possible and that assistance would be provided to the victim's family.
