Details are sparse, but so far the Chinese media have reported that Zhang then pulled over to the emergency lane and, while under the influence of illegal drugs, opened fire at passing vehicles, at one point taking a woman hostage. He then drove in the direction of Cangxi and stopped at the Yuanshanzi Bridge on the Guangnan Expressway. People in passing vehicles heard the hostage's cries for help and informed police. One passerby attempting to help was hit by a bullet and sustained injuries.
Once emergency personnel arrived, they attempted to negotiate with Zhang for return of the hostage, but he was unyielding, and by 9 p.m., a sniper succeeded in shooting and killing him and rescuing the hostage.
Zhang is reported to have a long history of drug abuse.
