All you pretty young things, beat it: Chengdu's dancing granny Cheng Changying (程昌英) is making the Internet-video rounds again with a video of her dancing to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" in full costume.
Cheng said that she practiced the movements for two months before going on camera. "It's actually pretty difficult to learn when you're this age," she tells the interviewer on camera before explaining that she taught herself the routine by dancing along with a video, pausing every second to imitate the movement.
The 70-year-old Huayang resident already achieved celebrity status in Chengdu after her appearance last year on China's Got Talent with her dancing partner, a younger male dancer she met while dancing at People's Park in Chengdu.
The pair didn't proceed to the next round (only one of the three judges voted for them), but after her performance one of the judges asked if she had any intentions by dancing with a younger man. Cheng giggled and adamantly replied, "Meiyou!" — No way! while her husband smiled from the backstage area.
Cheng, a retired engineer, was "discovered" after a video of her dancing to the K-pop band Wonder Girls' "Nobody" on a hot June afternoon was uploaded to the Internet. By that time, she had already been dancing in People's Park for three years, making the hour-long journey from her home every day.
One thing's for sure: She won't stop til she's got enough. "I hope I'm still dancing in 20 years, when I'm 90," she said during her China's Got Talent appearance.
