A photo exhibit commemorating the 120th anniversary of the establishment of what is now the Huaxi Medical College is currently open to the public at the outdoor square in front of the Huaxi Hospital Outpatient Department. Reprints of more than 400 images gathered from the archives of Huaxi Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu city, Sichuan province, the library of the Yale University Divinity School, and private Canadian collections are on display in newspaper-reading-style frames.
Many of the images depict life in Sichuan in the early 1900s, and although plenty of them are not particularly clear, they show some of the changes and some of the things that haven't changed so much over the past century. Various transportation modes, market scenes, and city architecture are all shown.
A number of the photos document members of the Kilborn family and their in-laws, Canadian missionaries who played an integral role in the development of the West China Union College (now Huaxi Medical College) and the related medical school (see sidebar). Some of these photographs, many of which were presumably taken by the Canadians themselves and preserved in Canadian archives, boast remarkably high image quality. Also in this category are numerous photos of the early days of the hospital and medical college and its students and graduates.
Another section of the exhibit shows (generally unspectacular) documents from the university, but among them are excerpts from Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China, a textbook on Sichuan dialect published by Omar Kilborn in 1917 for the benefit of fellow and future missionaries who would be sent by the church to Sichuan. The phrases reveal much about life as a foreign resident in Sichuan at that time, and are most likely of interest to Sichuan's modern-day foreign residents.
The exhibit was organized by Huaxi (West China) Hospital of Sichuan University, the Canadian Embassy in China, and the Sichuan Province's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the establishment of the hospital.
