Sichuan witnessed the start of storm season last night. Within 12 hours of last night's storm, a total of 58,418 lightning strikes were recorded in Sichuan province, with 8,444 occurring over Chengdu.
The Sichuan Provincial Meterological Office released an orange thunderstorm warning early on Wednesday. Numerous areas in Sichuan received more than 100mm of rain. The most heavily hit region of Sichuan was Chongzhou, which received 180mm of rain; within Chengdu the most heavily hit was Chadianzi, which saw 132mm of rain in 12 hours.
Chengdu's new Elevated Second Ring Road was flooded for about an hour in the early morning, and drivers were instructed to drive slowly, but the road resumed normal operation within 90 minutes.
In addition to the news that more than 300 people in Beichuan had to be evacuated, Sichuan Online reported that a 20-year-old bike shed collapsed:
At around 5 in the morning, there was a sound after the thunder. In the courtyard of 43 Wulidun Heng Jie, a wooden bike shed had collapsed. Five electric bikes and two bicycles were amid the rubble. The shed's keeper of four years, Peng Jinxiu, told the reporter that this apartment yard was built in the 1990s, and this shed has been standing nearly 20 years. "In that many years, some of the wood is probably rotting."
The storm is expected to continue for the next day, with at least another 100mm of rainfall.
In the meantime, the Tianfu Morning Post reports on the phenomenon of manhole theft in Chengdu. Little action is reportedly being taken on citizen complaints to the local city management, leaving gaping holes in the ground and endangering cyclists and pedestrians. During flood season this danger is heightened because the manholes are covered by water.
