With Zebra Music Festival is sticking to its running gag, announcing yet another postponement (for safety reasons, organizers say), Strawberry Music Festival is what's left for Chengdu's outdoor music enthusiasts.
One would expect China's biggest rock-music label and indie-monopolist Modern Sky to show off its ambitions, but don't get your hopes up to high: The label is taking no risks, dishing out 40 acts on three stages on two days, at the same location as the would-be Zebra.
The festival's complete lineup is a mix of Modern Sky's bands from Beijing and other Chinese cities and Chengdu's local acts performing on the Strawberry and Love stages. Genres run the usual gamut from rock to pop to folk to funk to hip hop. Chengdu-based DJs will populate the third stage, but only until 9:30 p.m., when the party officially ends. The only non-China-based band on the lineup is Jimmy LaValle's solo project The Album Leaf.
China's self-proclaimed "most important festival" fails to present an actual headliner comparable to those in Beijing and Shanghai, and, following the trend of Chengdu music festivals' increasingly boring lineups, Strawberry hits new highs.
