Get out and about early enough on any given day in Chengdu, and you're sure to stumble across tai chi practitioners performing their slow, controlled movements in public parks.
And some days, you might find them not just in the parks and open plazas, but also inside the bank.
That's what customers found inside a Chengdu branch of the CITIC Bank on an unbearably hot day recently.
A group of around 20 middle-aged and elderly residents were practicing tai chi inside the bank — and there was even a teacher leading them.
An Internet user aliased Jin Junyi took some photos of the scene and posted them online. The photos immediately attracted attention from netizens.
A Chengdu Commercial Daily reporter went to the bank to ask why the tai chi band had been allowed to occupy the bank.
In fact, said a spokesperson for the bank, the tai chi class is a community service provided by the bank for nearby senior citizens. Ordinarily the classes are held in the square in front of the bank but that day was so hot that bank staff decided to allow the class into the air-conditioned service hall.
At least tai chi is very quiet, pointed out some Internet commentators. There's no music involved, unlike with the groups of so-called dancing grannies that take over public spaces across the country every evening, blasting tunes new and old from sound systems.
The bank spokesperson confirmed that no customers were disturbed by the tai chi class. But no doubt many were amused by the spectacle.
