Getting to Chengdu from the Airport

I'm arriving in Chengdu at night, touching down at 22h00. I checked googlemaps (which recently added directions by "public transportation") and it seems that the buses run from the airport to the city. What it fails to mention is the time that the buses stop running. Has anyone taken a bus from the airport late at night, or is it best to just take a taxi (and how much does that generally cost by the meter)? Anything to look out for?
Cheers!

hi there,
i seem to recall having taken the airport bus into the city quite late, maybe 11 or even midnight. it's RMB10 and will take you to renmin nan lu. very easy, just walk straight out of the airport and you'll see the bus waiting at the curb. you buy a ticket before you get on at the little hut off to your right.if that fails, taking a taxi isn't too steep. it's around RMB40 (including the expressway toll which you'll be expected to pay) to the south section of the city, near the second ring road. maybe 10 to 15 more than that right to the center of the city. i'd advise against taking a black taxi as if you don't know where you're going you don't know how much it should cost ... and there's not really any reason to. legit taxis at the airport are generally plentiful.

Yes, I strongly recommend against taking those "black taxis". The first time I got on one of them, they charged me 100 RMB (hey, I thought I was getting a good deal at the time) and I had to share the ride with 2 other people, and of course, I was the last one to be dropped off. I later found out that the ride would have only cost me 60 RMB if I were to have taken a regular taxi. Just so you can have a general idea, it takes around 60 RMB on a legitimate taxi to go from the airport to Southwest Jiaotong University, which respectively, means that you will be traveling from the far south to the far north of Chengdu, so your cab fare should not exceed 60 RMB in most cases.

I agree the "black taxis" at the airport are fannoying. They overcharge you, but sometimes during rush hour downtown they are the only option if you can't find another taxi. They usually charge you more, they are less familiar with the city and the fastest way to go. On the other hand as some of the drivers just do it to make a living as they lost their jobs due recession they can be good for a nice chat. However if you are new in town and want a personal driver to get around town without waiting for taxis all the time they can be pretty convinient.

2nd last time time rushing to the airport the meter went crazy, so it's good to keep an eye on the jumpy meter (compare with the mileage on the tachometer). If you are pretty sure it's fake just hand the money you paid last time and threaten to call the police otherwise (get the license number, some taxis are fake).
