I'm interested in making some dou jiang, and I've heard this requires a machine. Does someone know where this machine can be bought (and how much it usually costs)? Also, is it possible to make "jiang" out of other kinds of beans? Thanks!

No machine required, you just soak the beans, grind them, squeeze out the soy milk, and heat it up with any flavour you want. But machines to make it (豆浆机, doujiang ji)are readily buy-able at any department store, home appliance store like guomei or suning, or large grocery store like auchan or carrefour. The more expensive machines grind the beans, extract the milk, and heat it but I think that is a bit of overkill (I wouldn't buy a machine with a heater.) Many of those machines will make similar drinks out of grains or you can use them as juicers for fresh fruit. A basic one will set you back a couple hundred yuan.

What--no machine require? As a working woman, I use my 豆浆机 EVERYDAY and would not drink soymilk without it. I bought mine at my local department store in Xindu District, on sale for 300 kuai.
If you're not poor, invest another 100 yuan to get a model that self-cleans because that is the only thing I wish mine did.
Best milks:
Soy milk from the dried beans you buy at the market out of sacks (not the kind you buy for snacking), add some brown sugar or rock sugar if you like
Rice and almond milk
Bean-rice medley: soy beans, red beans, mung beans, raw peanuts, and a little black rice
Peanut milk (experiment with different kinds of peanuts, although i like raw the best)
Black rice and sesame
Corn meal slush (congeals after a while)
The 豆浆机 will almost definitely come with a recipe book for fruit drinks (banana peanut) and other stuff (pumpkin soup!). It's awesome.

I just bought a Philips blender.
The base model (1.25L, 350W) comes with a pulp separator suitable for such jobs. Currently 199rmb at Metro.
The next model (1.5L, 400W) also comes with an extra attachment for grinding up nuts. But, it currently costs 399rmb at Metro.
Blenders are much more handy as they're better for using to make smoothies and thickshakes in summer as well!!!
