Are there any photographers out there in chengdu? I want to buy a camera and would like to make friends with some people who can show me the basics and give me some handy tips.

Cafe Panam(e) and Kaffee Stugan both hold small monthly/bi-monthly photo exhibitions, so give it a try. 82 Gallery in the West is a bit larger, but doesn't have exhibitions on display for the moment.

The camera market. For anything camera-related, you go to the camera market [Xishu Camera at 12 Wenjia Xiang is a good starting point - 文家巷12号西蜀相机—ed.].
I think the 82 Gallery/ Chengdu International Photography center could process film as well, but it seems their set up is more for pros.

Chengdu Photography Club has been formed by and for like minded camera users wishing to gain inspiration, advice and company in the quest for an ever better picture. Informal meetings are organized once a month where members are invited to present three themed examples of their pictures when they may either request or offer advice. The theme for the February presentation is 'occupations'. This month's meeting will be in the Bookworm on Tuesday, 28th February at 7.30pm. All nationalities are welcome to join regardless of photographic experience or ability.
Anyone planning a photographic trip, either inside or outside the city and who are looking for company, can post an announcement here where it will be circulated to all registered members: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CDphoto/
