I'm visiting a friend in Chengdu for Western New Years weekend. I wanted to know if anywhere in Chengdu there would be fireworks or a typical New Years Eve party to go to?

Try any of the A list clubs ((Wan Tan #1 or 88)) for a party! As for Fireworks, their might be a few but the real show will be in February.

You better readjust your expectations for the time being. New Year's in Chengdu is usually really unspectacular and boring compared to other parts of the world. Chinese people just don't really understand how to celebrate the New Year's. Fireworks were banned inside the cities, which was actually not such a bad move considering the population density and the possible dangers.
Stay tuned for potential updates, we might come up with something different. Maybe!

There will only be fireworks on Chinese New Years Eve.

Western New years Eve, 31st Dec, will only really be celebrated in the western bars.

Or, you can celebrate it on the street with those stupid big plastic hammers that people wave around and hit each other with.

The Shamrock is having a Wizard of Oz party on the 31st, and you are encouraged to dress up as Dorothy.

You can look at the listings on this website. otherwise, the best places are probably, Shamrock, Bookworm,Jellyfish,Paname, Mooneys,.

You could always buy your own fireworks and have a party!

Mooneys all the way, and then probably going to Muse.

The Underground Bar is having a 'Black and White' costume party (not compulsory) with drink promotions and prize raffle along with the usual great music, fun atmosphere and new year frolics. Starts at 9pm but, of course, you can get well fed beforehand with burgers, pies, panninis, casseroles, etc and enjoy buy one beer, get one beer free between 5pm and 8pm.

This one should have most of the events

For live music you'd have to head to Kuanxiangzi like last year or the panda mall/ UNO.
