Places to go within Chengdu

I can only speak very very basic Chinese but I cant read Chinese at all.
I would like to go around Chengdu on my own.
What is the best place to see within Chengdu and outside Chengdu without getting lost?
If you can give me some tips for traveling will be great.. Thanks.

you don't need much Chinese to get around, just get to a better hostel and pick up a map
usually people come for the pandas, sanxingdui and the leshan buddha
