Freedom of travel?

This may end up being a really dumb question - I might be working in Chengdu for a couple of months this Fall and will have plenty of free time.

I've never been to China before and a friend of mine - who has also never been to China - says that I can expect my freedom to wander around at will to be restricted and that I may even be "followed" by security people.

Frankly, that seems really paranoid but I wanted to check with you folks who are actually there and would know for sure.

I want to be able to wander around and sight-see as much as I can.

Will I be able to do that and are there any restrictions I should be aware of?

    Thanks for your patience!

You can usually just wander around pretty much anywhere in public. Nobody will follow you.

As anywhere else there are restricted areas (government, military grounds), but they are clearly the exception.
