  • Ok, what the hell is going on there?
    They play the same music over and over again for the last weeks, mainly Irish boy bands and the depressing Cranberries! (and U2)

    I ordered a vegetarian pizza (big 52rmb) and it was totally RUBBISH!!! The worst one i ever had in Chengdu! To much cheese, no tomato sauce and pumpkin... WTF!? So i send it back and told them it was bad, the second was again RUBBISH! hardly any toppings and way to much CHEESE!

    Man why always so much cheese?? Most of the laowai in CD are not American, i repeat: NOT American!

  • I like the bookworm. I mostly order sandwiches when I go, particularly the Paninis which on a cold Chengdu afternoon can remind you there is a god above those grey clouds. Get the mozarella, pesto, and tomato one.

    The atmosphere is comfy and relaxed. My one issue with the place is the smell. Whenever I go, I leave the place smelling like a deep fryer. Otherwise good prices, food, and place.

  • Go to Bookworm for the nice atmosphere but do not count on reliable service or consistently delicious food. I previously gave Bookworm 3 stars, but based on my more recent experience there I now give Bookworm 2 stars. The last time I ate here I had to wait more than an hour to receive my food - simply unacceptable. This was particularly frustrating because I had brought a friend with me who also had to endure the long wait. In my previous review I mentioned how I had to wait 45 minutes for my order, so as you can see the long waiting time is still a problem here. To make matters worse, one of the items we had ordered, the lasagna, tasted bad. The waitress also needed to be reminded to bring certain items we had ordered.

  • My biggest complaint is that when the garlic bread is good, its REALLY good . . especially with their mushroom soup BUT just not consistent. . I would give their big breakfast 5 stars but same thing . . not consistent which is a shame. . great atmosphere though. .

  • I've been going to Bookworm since September 2010 and it's my comfort zone! :) The environment is pretty chill, the food is decent, and the people are friendly/cordial. It reminds me of the hangout places in NYC and BROOKLYN! I have taken my students there and they LOVE it! Also, it's a place that has influenced and impacted my writing skills. I really really LOVE BOOKWORM!!!

  • I had the steak and mushroom pie.

    The same as the ones in Shamcock.

    Also was not hot enough.

  • Well... i didn't go here for a while because i had some bad experience in the past.

    But to give it a try after a year, i ordered a hamburger, it took them a good 30 to 40 min to serve it (it wasn't busy).
    But there was a problem.
    After i took a bite from it, it tasted rubbish, the flavor was boring and not hamburger like, the burger it self was burned!
    So i order a new one, again this one was no good, burned on one side and half raw inside...
    For 35rmb you would expect something good in a "western" place.

    The Bookworm is not consistent, one day it's good or fine, the other day it's soso or crap.
    Have a look in one of the Indian run places (Cacaja), they know how to train staff!

    Now i'm gonna eat some real greasy nasty street food ;) bye bye

  • I was hungry after no breakfast and 3 hours in a car. My driver dropped me off at Bookworm and joined me; his first time in a foreign place eating I'm sure. He looked bemused as I handed him an old book. What went through his mind? He's only been driving me for 6 or more years. The waitress explained and he ate his rice dish. No big burger or pizza for that Sichuanese.

    So I had my large pizza and it looked picture perfect. It was good. I ate it all with relish ( no, not that pickle stuff). I felt replete.

    Later I ate meat balls and jam at Ikea.

    And so home.

  • This place definitely deserves its title as cultural center of anglophonic chengdu. Lots of great events and packed houses.

  • For a place called Bookworm, I think they need a bigger variety of books.

    The foods good but pricey and the atmosphere is relaxed. Although I sometimes have the impression the place is fighting itself. No sure if it's a restaurant, a bar or a cafe. Throw in a library in there and voila!

    It's a place to go occasionally with new people but not really a recurring spot for me.

    Although, I do enjoy the Harper Lee!

  • I will not use empty adjectives like "cozy" or "warm" to describe this cafe/ bar/ bookstore in the center south part of Chengdu. The Bookworm is simply a bookstore with tasty food, foreign (English) books, and a bar that, even in the morning, can fill your pint full of Guiness. Other than the variety of Authors who come and speak about their books, or about other issues, their are events every week. Not many

    people know, but every Friday night, their is a live jazz band that is talented. Also, you can check out books if you become a member. Yeah, its relatively pricey for a second tier city in the Southwest of China, but it does have a good cup of coffee that you find in very few places throughout the city. And lets face it, most of Bookworm's clients are rich, so yeah, more power to bookworm for making a buck ;)

  • I love the atmosphere very much. It's nice to go there to read or have a glace.

    By the way, does anyone know if they sell this great guide : Cuisine mei wenti french cookbook? It is a bilingual french cookbook.

    If you'd like to start cooking it's really great. And since it's written in english, french and chinese, your ayi can also use it!

    I know it exist but I'm not sure Bookworm has it.

  • Really nice, chill place to hang out. Environment's great and it's usually fairly relaxed. They serve wine by the glass, which is a plus. Food is usually passable-to-below average but I do enjoy the salads.

  • I give the Bookworm a 3 ONLY for the nice coffee shop environment and free WiFi.

    It is a nice place to hang out and have a coffee or drink while you are reading or on the laptop.
    The food here leaves everything to be desired.

    I have eaten many different dishes and I am always disappointed even with the simple dishes like a hamburger and french fries.

    I don't know how they make that taste like it does, but I don't recommend eating here.

  • Come here to sit and read a book or have a glass of wine, the atmosphere is nice. Hop over to Zoe's or the Sultan if you are hungry.

  • Bookworm- I like to read so it's a nice place to just sit and read. One of the few quiet places you'll find in China. Tea is a little expensive but the setting makes up for it. Plus you can get some info on upcoming events in English. 9/10

  • while the Bookworm offers a cozy environment to get some reading or work done, I was disappointed with the goat cheese sandwich and french fries I ordered. While the inside for the sandwich seemed appropriate, the so called "focaccia" bread was dry and had no flavor.
