    • Use this place regularly as a watering hole as my location has no such bar, or access to Guiness. A lot of comments on here about poor service, seems strange to me as I have never had anything but great service. I only have to walk through the door to be greeted by name by the staff, I rarely have to hunt for a member of staff to serve me and all of them are really friendly. I think it depends on how you treat them in the first place that may dictate their treatment of you. The atmosphere is fine, even when it is packed to the rafters. Ideal place for a lunch date when it is quieter. One comment here made mention of the smoking. Well, to be fair, this is China, even hospitals have no smoking notices and people still smoke. To be fair, The Shamrock does offer a non smoking area with comfortable seating, but I guess you can't please everyone.

    • The price for a 528 beer, which you can buy at a shop for 3rmb just went up to 20 rmb, I'm boycotting the place at the moment. Oh and that keyboard player in there on thursday and friday should learn how to sing, but then again nobody pays any attention to him.

    • I'm a 48 year old American guy so I will be going there to chase young Chinese girls this week. By the way, I agree that the service sucks. I ordered a sandwich there last week. When I didn't come after 40 minutes I went to inquire. Only then was the order relayed to the kitchen. As I went to pay for my beer 20 minutes later, my sandwich arrived. Had it come a few minutes later, I would have left just paying for my beer. I am a fit triathlete so I will so how the women respond. Apparently this place is better than Mooney's at Shangri-La. I have heard that Mooney's gets some working girls there. I'll post later how Shamrock is for Thursday's Salsa night.... stayed tuned folks!

    • Tuesday Night dance classes June 2012 with Matt & Rachel are fun to watch and free. Dance floor is fun. Prefer to order striaght shots rather than Margueritas. Good place to meet people, Chinese or others. Food looks good, did not eat there.Prices by US standards are very reasonable. Only complaint are people who smoke inside despite no smoking signs! Has outside seats too. Fun place

    • I'm not a big drinker, so I don't frequent The Shamrock often, with that being said, I have had some feedback from people who have ordered while I was there. The sausage and bangers were a hit with a friend from the UK and my American friend liked their Greek Salad. I only ordered a glass of cranberry juice and that pretty much speaks for itself, I mean the fact that you can get a glass of cranberry juice at all.

    • To whoever wrote that last comment we saw you get given free shots due to the misunderstanding. We are also aware that it was posted incorrectly on this website not the shamrock website. We come in every week and every week the shot specials are on SATURDAYS not FRIDAYS. I happened to be there that day and it seems to me that you were treated fairly by the management and to be honest I was a bit jealous that you got free drinks and no one else did. Cheers!

    • I've been to Shamrock's several times and I have come to several conclusions. The food is decent. I'm usually pleased with the meal. The drinks are semi-reasonable.

But the problem is the atmosphere. Its a bunch of really old western guys trying to hit on girls 20-30 years younger than them. To each their own but this place seems to be a haven for these sleazy types. Several times I have had to get in a guest's face and turn them away as they try to pathetically hit on my date for the evening.

I don't know if we can blame this on the location, but it seems to occur at this place pretty regularly and it kills the vibe for many people in their 20's.

I recommend this place to an older crowd that wants to watch some football match and have a drink.

    • what can you say ? Cheap drinks lots of sport ( really nice pool table ) and the chook burger, which is actually 2 small burgers was surprisingly tasty. This is one of those bars that is dying for a face lift and refurb and could become something amazing.

    • I have mixed feelings about the Shamrock.

On the one hand, it is the natural hub for a lot of ex-pats/travellers and supports some of the local sports teams in the area. It has good coverage of a lot of matches, the paved area outside is a nice place to eat and drink, it has a good pool table- although it is rarely free, and the food is decent and the prices standard for western food/drink.

But, I would definitely concur with some of the other sentiments on this page. The service is rubbish (even for China) and the waiters are rude. It is also true that there is a bit of a sleazy older man vibe.

For me, the Shamrock is a decent starting/meeting point because of its location, but after a drink or two I feel like I want to move on and go somewhere else.

Some days 2 stars would be more accurate.

    • I think reviews are very“to each his(or her) own”. I like this place. Not only do I always run into people I know, but there’s a lot of traffic for travelers too. People aren’t too uptight for the most part, just trying to forget the day. I find the staff is always friendly and their English is good (getting better everyday), not to mention you couldn’t get a nicer guy to run the place. If you’re looking for a beer, game of pool(beware of sharks) and a often “Cheers”-like atmosphere, then great. If you want a bar exactly like home, then you might want to head back. (PS. you’re in China).

    • Awful place. Most of the staff are very rude and the service is just terrible. Both the food and drinks are quite bad and too expensive. In the evening it's crowded with older western men chasing after young chinese girls. I will never visit this place again.

thought he was just having a bad hair day... nonetheless, he was rude to my 2 guests on their first week in China...

We came back a 2nd time and the same waiter was -- yes, as rude as ever...

totally disappointed.. never coming back,,, never did..

    • I'll admit I like coming here in the afternoon (usually for a late brunch) more than at night. They make a decent breakfast and RMB 5 coffee specials during the day. During the night, Guinness on draft is nice, but the crowd at night skews older and, for some reason, vaguely creepy.

    • The food here is ok, typical pub grub, but if its busy you sometimes have to wait a while and I find some of the waiting staff in there quite rude/very slow when it comes to dealing with orders. For example, i've waited 10 minutes for mayo before(after waiting 45 minutes for my burgers)-then i went to find another waiter who got it in 30 seconds. The first waiter turned up 5 minutes later with some! They have a decent selection of drinks, and their pool table is top notch.

    • A good place to bring your foreign friends to enjoy a night out, though it gets awkward sometimes as the bar is mostly filled with older expats coming in for happy hour. But still, a good enough place where you can find decent drinks (proportioned mixes) and okay pub grub.

    • Personally I don't like this pub that much. Probably the closest thing to a UK chain pub so I find it a little soulless inside. However, it is an excellent sports bar, has the best pool table in town and the food is a sturdy fair to say the least. Sitting in the beer garden is the best spot to be and I have had a couple of good nights here. Tends to attract older expats and knob-heads that won't shut up about Hongkong etc...
