    • Kunming > Salvador's Coffee House
      萨尔瓦多咖啡馆

A solid place. Great food. Extensive menu. I heard it's been around for a while, interesting to see how it grows with Kunming's fast development with the rest of wenlinjie changing quite fast.

    • Chengdu > Leanna's Bakery
      莲娜西点坊

I'll agree that the atmosphere can sometimes be a bit.. off-putting, but during lunch it's usually not too bad (except for the music).

Leanna's really keeps my homesickness at bay. Most things are really good (sandwiches, pizza, most baked goods, cheese, and breads) and the quality is consistent. Everything is homemade and fresh. The prices are very reasonable. I don't know why anyone would pay more to get worse food at some of the other "American" chains around town.

Plus, they deliver pretty much everywhere. It may take a couple of hours but they will get to you and bring the comforts of home to your door, including butter, cheese, and all the things they sell in the store.

      馨香烤屋

The 28rmb salad bar buffet is the best meal to be had in Kunming for that price. Killer onion rings as part of that salad bar! Starts at 5pm Mon-Sat. They don't restock a dish if it runs out, but it's rarely an issue because there are so many others and no dish runs out unless you show up past 7'ish on a fri or sat.

Their steaks are Chinese steaks, and not a Western level of cut of meat, but the Korean dishes are excellent.

The only reason it's 4 and not 5 stars, is I live far away, and maybe the quality of the steak. Of course it was only 50rmb for a steak, potatoes, and a salad bar buffet included.

Oh yes, the staff are really nice, but it's not fine dining, so they don't rush to take your order or bring out water. The place is more relaxed, so give'em a hollar or just grab a menu and some silverware yourself.

      O'Reilly's爱尔兰酒吧

60 yuan for a pint of Guinness is very expensive. Fortunately, the Belgian beers on tap for 35 (I think?) are a good deal, as is the Fish n Chips with a pint of Carlsberg for 50.

    • Chengdu > The Lazy Pug
      懒巴哥

I just would like to say the owners of the Lazy Pug are the nicest people. I don't know if you can find such great service anywhere in Chengdu. Not only are they attentive, and reasonable, but they actually care about you. And your dog.

I brought my dog last night for the anniversary party, and as soon as Dana saw the dog she came over, loved it, and then asked if she (the dog) was thirsty. She immediately went to the kitchen to bring out a huge bowl of water for the pup, and then stayed around to chat.

It's the small things that count, I think. You know when you go to the Lazy Pug that you'll be taken care of very well, and sometimes that's the kind of guarantee you're looking for.

The music there, fortunately, is not like the typical bar (Paname, Jelly, etc)/club music For the most part it's quite good, and not in your mainstream rap/pop kind of way.

Also I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place. As an American, it honestly feels like I'm back at home sipping on a beer. It's the kind of place where you can temporarily forget that you're in the 'du.

    • Kunming > The Mask
      脸谱酒吧

Thank you Steve5150 for your comment and concern.
I certainly don't want to give the Mask bad press, and, of course, I do come back to the Mask as often as go to Kundu.
The incident was totally unrelated to the place, and my only impression of the Mask, as I said, is of smiling and tolerant people, friends on the stairs, pretty girls sitting around playing dice and chatting.

I didn't see it as a fight, as I had no hostile intention toward this angry chap. I am happy to hear he apologised (not to me, though).
Seems hooligans are very insecure people.
The staff -or a bouncer- couldn't have intervened anyway as it happened very quickly.
It was just an incident of life as can happen anywhere. Thank you Alex for preparing a bag of ice without second thoughts. I said I would return the cloth he wrapped the ice, butI can't seem to find it.

No cheese for months. What's going on? I asked the staff working there and the answer was indifference. Nobody seems to know or care.

Also car parking is free, bike parking you have to pay?

Went to The Spot for the first time tonight. Met up with friends and had a great time. We were 8 people altogether, so our food was taking a bit of time. The owner gave us free drinks and chicken wings because it. Great service, attitude and food. Will def be back.

    • Chengdu > Indian Food Corner

I went there yesterday and it wasn't closed, but I wouldn't recommend it either, sad to say (would love more Indian food choices). All the veggie dishes were basically the same; the samosa, although nice, came with tomato ketchup. And it was all crazy slow to appear on the table.

Namaste is still the best in my opinion. Will try out this new place Paradise though, let's see!

Mouthwatering pizzas. Easily the best pizza in Kunming especially the Californian Barbecue Chicken. Sitting on the rooftop on a balmy summer evening is fantastic even without much of a view.

    • Chengdu > Cru Winebar
      醇度

I was so happy when they turned this once wine bar, once wine shop back into a wine bar. I have been there 3 times now and going back again tomorrow with a group of friends. They have a great selection of wine by the glass including the fizzy stuff. They have a daily happy hour from 430 to 7 pm which is a by a glass get one free which is really great. They added food recently and it is quite good. They have great meat and cheese platters which includes bread and olives. The food I have tried is really good and I look forward to trying more on this small and simple menu. The last time I was there they were out of cheese, which was a bit disappointing, but I made reservations for tomorrow and asked them to make sure they had lots of food in stock for my party. The upstairs is really cozy, but it lacks air conditioning which may be an issue in the summer months. I look forward to this place staying open for a long time!

@jprnr, i'm only blaming the ayi for being ignorant and completely unable to serve customers. surely it isn't her fault if half the menu is unavailable, but when she constantly refuses to be up front about what is and isn't available and discusses menu items at length that are completely unavailable, it's annoying, a waste of time, and not at all what anyone would appreciate in a dining experience.

the main point of my post is that whoever is running the show is, shall we say, to be kind, 'lacking in business sense' for:

      1. hiring someone like her who is unable to perform even the most basic table service

      2. putting stuff on the menu that they have apparently no intention of making

      3. advertising on gochengdoo to attract a discriminating foreign clientele

      4. producing a menu that their staff is unable to understand

      5. putting the toilet in the corner of the dining room.

i did enjoy the food the other times i went, but in the end, it's not worth it.

Been there twice, second time hoping it would be better.
      It was !!

The music was so loud I couldn't hear anything anyone said, it was so smokey I could barely breath, it took even longer than first time to get a drink,so I left sober.
and the best.... even more fights to watch.
Just like being back in UK

i dont really think its fair to blame the contents of the kitchen on the ayi nor is it fair to put her in the middle of the 'chinese ability to unabashedly comment on your weight vs western predilection for body issues and self consciousness' debate. i'm just sayin

    • Chengdu > Indian Food Corner

have some comments to make in addition to my previous review.

went there with a friend for lunch on friday and was 'served' by an ayi who i've run into there before. middle-aged, unable to read the vast majority of the menu (because of the lack of chinese translations) and incredibly unschooled in the basics of waiting tables. in the past she's forgotten parts of orders, made mistakes with orders, or has promised that the cook was coming '马上' when it was fairly evident they weren't. last friday, she eclipsed all of these offenses rather spectacularly. it more or less went like this:

us: hey, naan's on the menu! can you actually make it now?

her: oh, yeah, no problem. but most people like the chapati.

      us: we like naan.

her: but don't you want the chapati?

us: no, can we please have some naan?

      her: oh, nope, not today.

us: ok, an order of chapati it is. we'd also like samosas.

      her: you like those, huh?

      us: yes.

      her: we're all out today.

      us: ok...how about this curry?

her: oh, you can't eat that, it's spicy.

us: no, we really like spicy food. can we have that?

      her: really?! are you sure???

      us: yes!

her: ok...(muttering about how spicy it is...)

us: oh, there's an 'indian breakfast' section on the menu, interesting...

      her: you want breakfast?

us: well, what are these items?

her: (explains what they all are, etc. etc.)

us: can we have an order of the first breakfast item?

      her: nope, we're all out.

us: what about the other breakfast items?

her: nope, can't get any of those today.

us: ok...(gritting teeth)...can we have some pakoras?

      her: sure, no problem.

us: thank God...ok, chapatis, spicy curry, pakora, what else?

me: oh, look, they have gulab jamun, my favorite! can we have that?

      her: that's a dessert.

us: we know, we like it. we'll have an order of gulab jamun.

her: (looking at me and i feel a direct quote is necessary here) "你那么胖喜欢吃甜品?"

      us: excuse me?

her: "你那么胖喜欢吃甜品?" (translation: you're that fat and like to eat desserts?)

      us: oh, no, she didn't...!

      me: can we go??

      my friend: um. yes. (speechless...)

me: (to the ayi) forget it, we're leaving!

her: oh...ok...(baffled as to why we'd be leaving)

my friend: (to the ayi) that was so rude, my friend is really angry!

her: oh, really?? um..."不好意思." (basically, 'pardon' or 'excuse me'.)

      end of scene.

from the previous review: "The service staff is kind and attentive"??? are you kidding me? maybe if the only restaurants you'd ever been to we're in a prison camp!

I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. EVER.

honestly, what were the owners thinking, openly advertising on gochengdoo.com, ostensibly with the intention of attracting foreign customers and having a waitress like this?!? i work hard for my money i will not pay two or three times a good bowl of noodles to be insulted. so yes, indian food corner is 'cheap' for indian food, but it's not the best indian food in town, the dining room still smells like a toilet, and the people 'working' there are utterly ignorant of how to run a business.

and, as a side note, the 兰州拉面/lanzhou la mian/muslim noodles a few doors down is great.
