      @hunter101

"Most foreigners i meet ALWAYS talks about sex or 'bitches' as they call them. I have respect for the opposite sex and will not call them that, unless they are total cunts, then ill tell them off."

Ha, you won't call a girl a 'bitch' because the respect you have for the opposite sex, yet you seem to have no problem calling girls 'cunts'. Seems a little bit contradictory.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > My Company wants to prematurely cancel my Visa

LA Redneck, you can do all the research you want, but sometimes you run into unforeseen complications or situations. I didn't come here to bitch and moan. I'm completely aware of the illegality of working on an F visa and shady work practices on the part of these English training schools. I didn't come to China expecting to work illegally on a F visa either. I had no other feasible choice though at the time and I rather not go into why because it's really not that important and it'll just be too long to read. But you don't know people's situations, so you shouldn't be so quick to judge. I just wanted to gather more information about this, and see if anyone had gone through something similar which might help me out.

@Ira - That's so badass. I'm thinking about doing this, but I'm worried my company will alert the PSB and they'll record it in some system, making it difficult for me to get a visa if I ever want to come back to China.

Thanks for ALL your help though (La Redneck included). You all have some interesting insight and experiences. I will definitely call Nick and ask for his opinion. I'll update y'all with what happens, in case this information will be of use to someone else.

TL;DR Does my company have the right and reason to prematurely cancel my visa because my work contract is over?

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > My Company wants to prematurely cancel my Visa

So I'm 'interning' at an English training school on an F visa that my company helped me get. My F visa expires in November, but my contract with the company ends in mid-August, and I would like to travel for a month after. My company says they must cancel my visa on our last day of employment. Can they do this?

Yes, they helped me with the documents and whatnot to procure the visa, but I paid for it all on my own. What is even more frustrating is that they have given me many different reasons for having to cancel it... First, they said since my company is 'sponsoring' my visa they don't want me as a liability, then they said it's not the company's policy, it's actually the PSB's policy..

So I called the PSB and spoke to someone in Visa Services (a phone number which my company's HR dept. gave to me) who said that most companies DO NOT cancel visas on the last day of employment, and in fact, the PSB recommends that companies do not. But then my HR rep called me this morning, after I had told her I called the PSB myself, and told me she called 'a special number' at the PSB, and spoke to someone who now says they will fine both the company and me if the company doesn't cancel my visa on my last day of employment. I asked her why we had gotten different information from the PSB, and she said it's because they misunderstood me and thought I was going home to the USA immediately, and not traveling. But that doesn't make sense... if I was just going to go back home as soon as my contract ends, then this visa thing wouldn't even be an issue so I'm almost positive that the PSB person I spoke to and I were on the same page.

So I'm frustrated because I'm getting a lot of different information and I already paid 1,000 yuan for this F visa they want to terminate early, and now might be forced to leave the country to get an L visa. I'd obviously have to pay for that flight and visa on my own, as well. It's a big pain in the ass.

Has anyone had a similar experience or know anything about this?

It would be a tremendous help. Cheers.

Thanks for updating, misubi. I am also going to go with Globy relocation just so I make sure my dog makes it back to the states with me.

I'm glad there was no quarantine examination, or paperwork for that matter stateside. It sounds like it was an easy transition.

Anyway thanks for all your help. Glad to hear you and your pup made it!

Do any of you know if there is a marathon or half marathon this year in Chengdu?

I know there was a half-marathon last year, and when I went to the website it mentioned it was an annual run, but I haven't heard of anything this year.

Would love to run my first marathon in China, of all places.

I'm also in the same position as you misubi. I did some research and from my understanding you also need to get your dog microchipped and registered. I'm having trouble finding consistent information though. The CDC website is probably the most up to date and reliable http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/dogs.html.

Thanks for all your suggestions and opinions! Got it worked out.

Well, in terms of a bar, I was thinking less Paname and more of a quiet, small locale, which someone was able to find so we won't have to worry about other people talking too loudly and what not. We have a time, location, and even a projection screen, but it sounds like all of you already are set.

I just thought it'd be a fun experience to watch it with other people who also love the Game of Thrones.

Wherever you are, whoever you're with, there's no mistaking that it's going to be an amazing episode. Enjoy!

To all fellow Game of Thrones fanatics:

As you all know, the 1st episode of the 2nd season is going to air on April 1st, 9pm EST.

How are you going to watch it? I'm assuming everyone will watch it the standard way, which is download it a day after and then see it.

But I was wondering if any of you would be interested in a Game of Thrones viewing party at some bar.

I know HBO is accessible on Chinese TV so I was even wondering if us folks in China would be able to watch the episode as it's being played over in the States, although I realize it would be 9 AM for us here.

      I guess the questions are:

      1) How are you planning on watching events unfold in Westeros in the 2nd season?

      2) Is there a way to watch S02E01, together, at a bar at the same time it's being played in the States?

      3) If not at the same time, would anyone be interested in watching a downloaded episode at a viewing party the day after? Which bar do you think would be into that?

      GET AT ME.

Are there any photo labs here in Chengdu open to the public where you could develop your own films? Or perhaps open to someone willing to pay a fee for usage?

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > Painting/Drawing Lessons

      Hi,

I know there was a post about independent drawing lessons organized by several individuals a while back, but that's not really what I'm looking for so I thought I'd start a new thread.

Does anybody know how and where I can sign up for painting and/or drawing lessons that would be more structured and instructive than an independently organized group who get together to just paint? Perhaps there are classes I can take at Sichuan University?

If anybody has any information, or suggestions on how to go about this, please let me know.

      Thanks!

I use chinoxy.com, and I'd say it's legit. I haven't had any problems with it. You can also use www.anonsafe.com to get onto other sites that the Great Firewall has blocked, including facebook. Can't use it for sites to watch videos, like youtube, though.

I haven't seen the kind of mochi you're looking for... but I'll keep my eyes peeled. Where can I get some good frozen yogurt here? I like stores with a lot of topping options, including the mochi.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > Traditional Boxing

Can anyone recommend a good gym or trainer that offers traditional boxing lessons? By traditional I mean nothing specialized like kung fu, just good ol' regular boxing with the wraps, gloves, punching bag, and ring.

I would love any suggestions— nothing high-end and expensive, please.

      Thanks!

    • Forums > Food & Drink > HAMBURGERS

Sim's Cozy Hostel has good burgers for good prices. I'm a vegetarian myself so I haven't tried them, but my boyfriend absolutely loves them and highly recommends them. They're also very affordable, the beef burger is 20, and the pork cheeseburger (+bacon) is 22. There's also a burger with egg on it. Sim's has good cheap "Western" food in general if you ever have the craving. I personally love their "Western" breakfasts, they've got homemade museli, yogurt with honey, cereal, sweet beans, sausages, bacon, fried potatoes, french press, and whatever else you can think of. The breakfasts are also quite cheap. Definitely a place worth checking out.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > Local Environmental Groups

@Kitsune, baileyy, and anyone else who said they were interested in doing environmental work in Chengdu:

Thanks for your responses. It's good to know there are people out there who also are passionate about the environment, and would like to promote environmental protection, as well as educate others about the environment. I'm living in a hostel right now, and am looking for an apartment since I secured a job today. Once I settle in my new apartment, which hopefully will be in a couple of days, we should meet up to talk and brainstorm ideas. It would be great to connect with other existing groups, or perhaps somehow network and bring them all together for events or whatever. We can talk! I'll post again once I'm settled in my new place, keep your eyes peeled!

      @invisible,

Thanks a lot, that sounds right up my alley. I'll definitely be there!

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > Local Environmental Groups

For someone who sounds like they know a lot, you sure don't. Your definition is environmental protection is quite limited, and if we were to follow your rigid definition of environmental protection, well our environment would still be fucked.

Even if we reduce the size of the population, if we still continue to be wasteful and degrade the environment then we still haven't achieved full environmental protection. Reducing the population would reduce the stress on natural resources, but not every country can assume a policy like the One Child Policy overnight (not saying they shouldn't try to figure out policies to reduce population). But what do we do in the meantime? Sit around and argue the definition of environmental protection?

True, it's more harmful for the environment for 1 billion people to consume and waste resources, but it's still harmful if 1 million were to do so, although it may not be to the same magnitude. It's about addressing environmental issues and solutions, about protecting our environment, whether it be for the benefit of the environment and (or) humans, not just reducing population size. Environmental protection is just as much about overpopulation as it is about recycling, sustainable energy, reducing GHGs, protecting endangered species and a local ecosystem, water conservation, sustainable agriculture, relying more on bicycles and walking instead of cars, and turning off the water when you brush your teeth. As you can see, environmental protection can include a wide range of activities that protect the environment.

Anyway, this is a thread for people who want to help, not for people who want to start an argument.
