Classifieds > Jobs > Jobs Wanted

      Hello,

I am a native of New York and I've been studying Chinese for four years and passed the HSK 5 in December of last year. Recently I've grown tired of teaching English to Children as is the 老外 way, and have decided to use my understanding of Chinese to get a change of pace and provide a service that can sometimes be hard to find in this city. If you're sick of seeing Chenglish translations and would rather not have to edit a translation you've already payed for, then I'm your man! I guarantee quick, high quality Chinese to English translations that will blow anyone else out of the water. If your project requires high efficiency and accuracy, I urge you to send me an email at term171013@gmail.com with a short self-introduction and overview of the task at hand. I will then provide you with a quote of my lowest price for said project, and we can negociate from there!

Yeah, about 20-27 probably at Sichuan University. There are older of course, but they're fewer and farther between. The oldest you'll find are probably Korean or Japanese and tend to keep to themselves

I was on the scholarship last year. I'm self paid now, but we'll be in the same building, so see ya in the fall!

So.... yeah, essentially, not hearing anything is just typical China. Most of the officials at 川大 probably don't know much either until it stuff starts to actually happen.

From experience I can tell you that you're going to want to get here a week or two early to get settled in. You need a local phone number, I suggest China mobile for that as you can get a pay as you go sim card type deal, and you're going to need an ICBC bank account to receive your monthly stipend. Get the phone number first because you need it to register for the bank account. Once you get those squared away you need to go to the Public Security Bureau to get your x-visa converted to a residency permit, and if you're living off campus you need to go to the police station and register with them. That should be it for bureaucracy stuff.

I don't remember when it was, but sometime just before classes start you'll take a placement test to determine which level you'll be taking, although the results of the test are just a suggestion and in the end you have complete freedom to choose which level you go into. Personally I skipped a level between first and second semester and nobody said anything about it. They really don't care very much as long as they get their tuition money, though the instruction really is pretty good.

When you get here, go to the second floor of the West Student Apartments (not the dorms) and talk to the ladies in the overseas student office. They'll get you somewhat squared away. If you still need help, I'll be happy to pm you my number and I'll give whatever assistance I can.

Learn characters. It helps immensely when you're learning new vocabulary. Personally, I can't get a new word to stick, especially if it's meaning is at all abstract, unless I know which characters are used. Even if I don't remember how to write the character, it's important to know your 是 from your 视 from your 事 from your 式. All four of those are pronounced the same way and have completely different meanings. Knowing which one is the component in a word will help you figure out the word's meaning, why it means what it means, and help you remember it much better than just trying to memorize the syllables.

10/week 8k/month. Shitty teaching job, there are better rates out there.

Sichuanese and Mandarin are actually relatively close. Close compared to Fujianese or Cantonese, anyway. Most young-ish women, especially most with a college education, will speak Mandarin without much if any hint of Sichuanese. I personally haven't been hugely successful with Chinese women yet, but there are certainly a lot that would suit a foreign guy. The ones that speak really good English are frequently really into foreign culture and people and will be more open to dating someone not of Chinese descent. Mooney's is a good place to find women, but there are also an awful lot of gold diggers there as the bar is in one of the ritzy-er hotels in Chengdu and has a lot of rich middle aged western dudes who just want a young Chinese girl to fool around with while they're here on business. J

llyfish is also pretty good for finding girls who are open to westerners, though I find a lot of them to be too loose for my liking. Again, no shortage of gold diggers. You could also try The Leg and Whistle for a less clubby and more pubby kind of scene. The owner is a really nice woman who speaks excellent English and a lot of the people who go there are pretty cool. There's some sifting to be done in just about any bar scene, so I'd say just go and try to meet people and you might find what you're looking for.
