Thank you for this update. I was in Chengdu teaching last summer, and this breaks my heart. I've heard from some of my students, and their families are fine, but so many families are not. I saw the memorial to the Wenchuan quake, and it was so moving, and now this? I hope you all are safe.
I was in Chengdu last summer teaching. I'm also a vegetarian. The best meal I had was at Vegetarian Lifestyle, because I could eat all the Sichuanese specialties. It's a beautiful room with good service, too.
I also had many fine noodle dishes from local joints. The place where I stayed served cold garlic noodles for breakfast, and I've been trying to recreate them all year.
As for the Western places, I went to Pizza Hut on occasion because it was familiar, I knew what I would get (no language issues!), and it was a nice place to sit for a while.
Yes, Hong Qi. Also, the money you put on the card expires at the end of the month, so budget accordingly. You can refill the cards at any time, though.
By the time I had the card figured out, it was time to leave Chengdu. Alas.
I'm teaching this summer at Southwest Jiaotong University, and my accommodations, apparently, do not have Internet access. I'm tired of going to Starbucks! My network finder shows a "China Unicom", and it looks like there is a way to buy WLAN service. Yes? No? Does anyone have any suggestions or help?
