Yeah, that's it. It happened right at the front entrance of Europe City. I guess they still haven't caught the criminals, but that guy is quite the hero for intervening and I hope he comes through alright.

My wife and I live in Europe City. We just came home at 12:44am and saw a few cops as well as almost all the Europe City security guards in front of the main gate around a silver Audi. We asked one security guard what was happening, she told us that the driver of the Audi had parked in front of Europe City and went to get something from the trunk of his car. At the same time, three guys with blond dyed hair came and grabbed a bag from the passenger side of the car. A resident of Europe City building 1 saw what was happening and tried to stop the three thieves. However, they were carrying long knives. They slashed him across the face and across the back. (She said she could barely stand seeing that much blood.) The thieves escaped in a van, the man who tried to help was taken to the hospital. She also said that is the third recent robbery of that kind in Europe City. Be careful out there guys.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > NHL Playoffs

I've shelled out for NHL Center Ice for a few years in a row now...the connection isn't always stable but it is certainly worth it to me. It's usually good for the afternoon games and East Coast games, but it starts to get really choppy after 10am. I use wifi on my laptop at two apartments, one has 2mb/s and the other has 6mb/s, but as I said they are both sometimes good and sometimes choppy. I did just watch the Rangers and Bruins games tonight and the picture was crystal clear...but that was 1-4am Chengdu time.

Location: Dafa AV/Electronics Market Dong Yulong Jie 东玉龙街大发电器市场

Directions: Ask for directions, it's off a small street behind the Holiday Inn downtown.

But the best bet is to taobao what you want, then find a seller in Chengdu that has it and give him a call or go to his shop.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > Friendly Warning about Adiwer Gym

I was foolish enough to buy an Adiwer membership before they even opened, since I live in Europe City and I thought even if they weren't great, the convenience of having a gym where I live would outweigh any shortcomings on their part.

      I was wrong.

I should have been tipped off by the fact that they claim to be, "From Australia" but there is no sign of any Australian Adiwer anywhere, either at their gym or on the internet. These are not trustworthy people, they obviously have no problem misrepresenting themselves.

The second warning bell should have been when we were signing up. We noticed they didn't have a decline press, and we asked if they could get the dumbbells up to 60kg. They promised everything with alacrity, and even wrote it on our contract. They were supposed to open last October, they didn't officially open until this June, and they still don't have a decline press or 60kg dumbbells. The manager has been telling us, "They're coming." for almost a year now.

The third warning bell should have been the pricing. As I said, I bought my membership "sight unseen" on a three-year deal for 3980 yuan, which isn't that bad. Now they are charging 3980 for one year, and if you want to use the pool that goes up to 7000. They don't offer anything more than any other gym in Chengdu for this outrageous price, they are just subscribing to the mentality that if they charge more for something it is magically worth more.

But the worst thing about this gym, after all the lying, is the shoddy construction. Every time you put a weight down on it, the floor shakes and trembles. I've been putting heavy weights down on gym floors for all of my adult life, and I've never seen or heard a floor tremble and echo like this place does. Even when you're not using heavy weights, it makes a huge sound. So then the managers and service people there will come to you and tell you to, "Please be quiet with the weights." But there's nothing that can be done about it, 40kg, 30kg, even 20kg weights all make this loud sound. And now your workout is ruined because the whole time you're worried about making noise and upsetting the restaurant below, so you can't focus on maxing out.

And by the way, that restaurant below Adiwer, the same one that complains about the noise of the weights, they don't ventilate properly, so whenever they are cooking the dense, sharp, spicy and oily smoke comes up into the gym and burns your lungs and throat. Try doing some serious cardio with Sichuan peppers burning through your cardio-respiratory system.

Like I said, this is just my friendly warning. Like salespeople anywhere, Adiwer will tell you anything to separate you from your cash and if you are unsatisfied it will be almost impossible to get a refund.

    • Chengdu > Jellyfish
      水母酒吧

I have only great things to say about this place.

Finally Chengdu has a real bartender who knows how to make real drinks that make you really $*@!-Faced.

First we tried the Long Island Iced Teas.

Yoni pours like a pro, 2 bottles in each hand and the alcohol almost reaches the top of a tall glass with ice.

The reason you drink a Long Island Iced Tea is supposed to be that the amount of alcohol in them can give your buzz a head start, but in Chengdu most LIITs are 90% Coke.

After the Jellyfish, I will never order LIIT anywhere else in Chengdu ever again.

Next we tried mojitos...everyone agreed they were also the best in Chengdu.

(Yes, he uses real fresh mint.)

Next was Irish Car Bombs, which makes it a good time to note that Yoni pours a perfect beer.

A nice slow pour into a frosted glass...again, the way it's meant to be.

...followed by another LIIT...as good as the first...

      Then came Jagger bombs...

And Yoni insisted that we try his Absinthe...He lights it on fire, then pours out the alcohol and captures the fumes in a glass.

You then take a straw and inhale the fumes, followed by downing the shot.

I didn't see the Green Fairy, but I was already having such a great time...

The final drink was Yoni's creation.

We had run out of ideas and just told him to make us whatever he wanted.

I don't know what was in it, I only remember that it was Orange and strong enough to let me know that I'd had enough.

Anyway, great drinks mixed by a real pro, definitely the best cocktail bar in Chengdu.
