- Donuts, donuts, donuts: Where to get them in Chengdu
Yesterday I found "Terk's Donuts" in a downstairs food court on the ChunXi (BuXing Jie) Shopping area.
They said they were a Malaysian chain, which reminded me of the Best Bite Donuts in Hangzhou, who were also from Malaysia.
Not bad tasting, but still with quite a soft texture.

- Chengdu to pilot free bike-rental program
Having just arrived in Chengdu after 3 years in Hangzhou, I can say that, in Hangzhou at least, the free (for the first 1 hour) bike hire scheme was very good.
It was established about halfway through my time there, and by the time I left there were small depots, each with about 12 - 30 bikes, and some jumbo depots, all over the city.
It became quite convenient to use, and even at moderate traffic times, by pedaling fairly energetically you could get around the city virtually as fast as a bus. At peak hour you can easily get around faster than buses.
Despite having a similar number/density of cars on the road, the difference I can already see in Chengdu is that far fewer roads, and none of the smaller streets, have safe separation of cars and bikes. That's a big concern when cycling here.
But, hopefully, once this scheme gets going people will leave their cars at home and take a bike instead, thus relieving that problem somewhat.
Chengdu's Metro/Subway development is also ahead of Hangzhou's so that will have an effect too. There do seem to be fewer taxis in Chengdu though...
But, bring on the free bikes I say!
Another thing I don't know much about in Chengdu is the rate of bike theft. I had 2 bikes stolen in Hangzhou. Both from inside my apartment complex! I always keep my good mountain bike indoors, but the others were cheaper get around bikes. This kind of scheme can substitute for those.
When I left Hangzhou I got my 300rmb deposit and remaining credit back. Simple.
It will need to have depots spreading out into the suburbs away from the subway stations though.

Yum!
I was just thinking about donuts....
Chef Rod, when is your store's Chengdu branch opening?
What's the exact location?
Yeah, it's a pity that most donuts in China are very soft and airy... I wonder if it's a deliberate money saving ploy? It's always scrooging over quality/service here in China it seems!
Also, in Hangzhou, my request for a tasty hot fresh basic cinnamon sugar coated donut were always met with blank looks... :((

Forums > Living in Chengdu > Avatar in 3D in ChengDu?
Well, I saw "Avatar" in 3D last night at the TaiPing Cinema on the ChunXi (BuXing Jie) Shopping area.
90rmb/pp, or 63rmb for members...
If you want English language then make sure you choose a YuanBan (原版, original version), not Chinese dubbed, session. The YuanBan version has Chinese sub-titles.
To be honest, I didn't really notice a lot of the 3D effects... The version I saw on DVD a few weeks ago looked virtually the same to me...

It's also on in 3D at Pacific (TaiPing) Cinema at the intersection of WuHou Ci Avenue and YiHuan. 118rmb/pp though... At least, it's that price for the evening session...

Thanks invisible.
It's for when a couple of friends come to visit during the next 2 weeks.
Today, after watching the Superbowl at Shamrock in the morning, I walked up to the Digital Plaza to price Netbooks, and then I walked west along YiHuan Nan.
I passed a couple of cinemas on YiHuan Nan. The first was called Arden Cinema (HuaYuan Ying Cheng), and then another km, or so, further west there was another cinema (name?) in the Trustmart (HaoYouDuo), Dicos and Computer Market building (also a gym upstairs I think).
Both those cinemas are still offering "Avatar" in 3D for 70 - 100rmb.

Well done Saints!
Actually, I was notionally going for the Indianapolis Colts...
Anyway, it was a good game, with plenty of thrills (from my ignorant Aussie perspective at least...).
Shamrock put on a good value breakfast, but a bit more potato in the hashbrowns would be good...
It was a good crowd too. It seemed most were New Orleans Saints fans, so they got the result they wanted. :))

Forums > Food & Drink > Soy milk machine
I just bought a Philips blender.
The base model (1.25L, 350W) comes with a pulp separator suitable for such jobs. Currently 199rmb at Metro.
The next model (1.5L, 400W) also comes with an extra attachment for grinding up nuts. But, it currently costs 399rmb at Metro.
Blenders are much more handy as they're better for using to make smoothies and thickshakes in summer as well!!!

Chengdu > Mooney's Bar
香格里拉大酒店爱尔兰吧Seems like a good place.
Nice food. I had the Fish and Chips, my friend had the Tandoor Pizza, both were good. In fact, I didn't think the food prices were too expensive (unless you want to order some Aussie Beef... and I don't count... ;)).
Drinks aren't cheap, but there are more expensive bars around though.
Unfortunately, the Scotty Wright jazz performance we went to see tonight (advertised here on GoChengDoo) had been switched to last night (Valentines Day)...
:((
Got to see Scotty when he turned up for some dinner tonight though...
I saw advertisements for a New Zealand (cover?) band who start in March. I think they're called Solidaz.
I'll be back.
