    • Chengdu taxi service to be upgraded under new plan

I think the gov is also assuming that the taxi driver licensed to the vehicle is actually driving it. Almost never does the person in the driver's seat even remotely match the picture on the registration card.

    • Forums > Food & Drink > New Bakery Near Waterfront/Jiu Yan Qiao

I tried it the other day. Can't speak for the bread. But I tried a cheesecake and pretzel. Wasn't impressed, had better in town. Very limited selection of breads and beverages at rather high prices considering the fact that its a bakery/coffee shop, not a restaurant. Didn't think the seating was particularly comfortable or inviting either.

So I'm going to be the voice of dissent and say that this bakery/cafe/bar-like place is trying to be a little bit of everything but not particularly good at anything.

The coffee/wine bar on the corner (whatever its called) in my humble opinion or the Bingo Bagel around back have better prices, quality, or environment.

Supposedly there is another one at Lan Kwai Feng starting tonight as well.

ChengduBeer.com brought it up as well.

So anyone got any which one might be better? LKF's is free so that's a leg up in my book.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > paintball in Chengdu?

Yup, they have a small netted in field at the abandoned "National Defense Park" in the south out towards the airport. The markers are ancient (same ones I used there back in 05'), shoot BB size paintballs, and you have to wear a heavy scooter helmet/face shield that fogs up horribly.

But hey, actually shooting your friends is still better than the cheesy Lasertagish "Counter-Strike" fields that seem to be far more prevalent and solely populated by doe-eyed office-types on a voluntold "team-building" work outing. The ND Park has them both, insist on the paint.

Details accurate as of October 2010: The cost per paintball game with 30 paintballs is 50 RMB (each additional paintball is 1 RMB). Lasertag is 138 RMB for a half day of play. To reserve the paintball field in advance requires a 300 RMB deposit, if memory serves.

Address: 17 Xin Yuan Da Dao (Should be on your right, keep any eye out for rusty rockets and a bus station.)

    • Forums > Food & Drink > new in chengdu, i need protein powder and wieght-lifting supplements

Most of the gyms are selling the same local brand in white, blue, red container lately. Seems to have replaced the copy BSN stuff that was floating around a couple of years ago. I don't trust it, figure since some companies had no problem dumping melamine in milk to up the protein count what are they willing to do for protein powder?

But I did notice the Ozone gym in Ren He Spring department store had NitroTech from Muscletech on sale. I didn't inquire about the price, but if you are charging 12,000 RMB for a membership I suspect the protein powder is no bargain either.

Otherwise the above mentioned Taobao or Bodybuilding.com are your best bets.

    • Forums > Food & Drink > Peter's Tex Mex raises prices by 20%

A couple of years back Peter's used to be my American style gut-bomb breakfast of choice. Gotta say that the Lazy Pug Sunday brunch has won me over hands down. Can't beat the price, quality, and lack of screaming children running amok.

    • Chengdu > LAIN GUY PARIS

My wife has had her hair done her twice. Both of us have been pretty happy with Lain's results and the price is reasonable.

Also, pretty happy with the fact that I can sit comfortably waiting for her to be finished in an environment not crazily decorated, without annoying blasting music, and not staffed entirely by incompetent children who look like rejects from South Park's metro-sexual episode.

    • Chengdu > The Spot

Comfortable atmosphere, good food, good location.

Tried their garden salad, chicken wings and hamburger. All was very good. Only issue is that "starters" should come before the main course, but otherwise the waitstaff seemed attentive and trying to provide a good level of service.

So far I would say "The Spot" is a welcome addition to Chengdu's foreign owned/run restaurant scene. Keep it up.

    • Chengdu > Cru Winebar
      醇度

Have to say I'm pretty happy with the place as well and hope they stick around for a while. Good wine, good price, good ambiance, good location.

But......I concur that the upstairs really needs a wall unit air conditioner installed. The AC unit is downstairs, doesn't do a thing for the upstairs. The heat up there really makes the otherwise comfortable floor hard to enjoy.
