    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > High End AV Equipment

Hi. I'd suggest doing your research on English-speaking websites then use the model codes to surf on www.jd.com primarily ( Here's a couple of examples: http://tinyurl.com/bnhgqqo or http://tinyurl.com/d5tux3v) or if you're feeling brave have a go on Taobao. But JD in my experience is good quality brand new gear. If you want to listen to equipment first there are occasionally-to-be found shops but they are rare. Used to be one in Tongzilin but it moved. There is another one in one of the buildings across Renmin Nan Lu from Kempinski. If I can find the address I'll post it.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > Rooting android

My advice would be to steer well clear of Mobile Phone street for this, and especially if you want the update in English. Google search has issues here but if you search with Yahoo you can find plenty of help, including tutorials on YouTube. You don't say what the model is but my benchmark for rooting is on this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/[...] Just start searching for your phone model, having created a login which you'll need later. I've successfully rooted and customised my HTC Desire HD following their instructions - but having done lots of careful research first. More recently I successfully rooted my HTC One X using the same resources. Good luck and be careful.

There is the Christmas Bazaar in American Gardens on 17th November. Suggest you contact Linda Carles at linda_carles@hotmail.com. She is one of the main organising connections. I'm sure she'll be glad to help if she can. Posters are also up in the Bookworm. Here's part of the text:

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > China Unicom mobile phone service - How bad is it?

Well I used China Mobile for 4 years until my SIM card died a few weeks ago and I switched to Unicom's current deal, because call and data costs were adding up. So no wfor much less money (66RMB a month) I get 240 texts, 300MB of data and 50 call minutes which suits me fine. I know Unicom can have some reception issues but so can China Mobile - just when you need them the most. So far in all the areas I use frequently I've never had an issue with reception or call drop out - not once!!! And the data speed on 3G/H is blisteringly fast - around 4MB download which is faster than my office link. I dont think Unicom can still be classified as the poor relation. I know its an extreme example but I was sitting in Shangli village near Ya'An with a speed test showing nearly 6MB down speed - and Shangli is very small place in the bottom of a valley. Just my experience. I live in the south and work in the east.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > 10th Chengdu International Motor Show

Well just a quick update. I managed to go to the show yesterday morning as a kind benefactor allowed me to usetheir VIP ticket. So thanks for that. Quite interesting and some knock-out cars. Amazing how the car market here is coming on. Also some at the other end of the scale that should never see the light of day. Nice touch at the MG stand was an old MG1300 like I used to have in UK as a student. And an old Morris 1000 like my grandfather had. Little bit of nostalgia.

Seems its open every day from 9:00am until 6:00pm, and Sunday 25th is the last day. Just beware of tickets selling out again - go early......

    • Chengdu > Happy Valley Amusement Park
      欢乐谷

Happy Valley is awesome. 3 major rollercoasters - the top 2 are fab. But beware of sitting next to virgin riders who have no idea what is about to happen..... Other daredevil recommendations are the rotating pendulum, and the high-speed vertical lifts. The giant log flume and its smaller rapid run neighbour are just a good laugh - but you WILL get wet, even with the polythene capes supplied. If you have any doubts whether this kind of park is for you then dont bother but my wife loved it and she suffers from vertigo. Lots of snacks and drinks available but nothing substantial - the kebab place next to the 3D cinema is worth a visit though. Never had any problem with transport or pricing - but i know it can happen - stick to the meter and be firm with any taxi. Bus is very cheap - use Google Maps to check your route in English - it gives bus numbers.
